Program Overview

The On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) is a $704.1-million Federal Government of Canada initiative, established to support farmers in adapting their operations for a more positive impact on climate change.

The BC Investment Agriculture Foundation (IAF) is one of select recipient organizations across the country chosen to distribute these funds. Funding is available through their Climate Agri-Solutions Fund (CAF) Program for select activities that store carbon and reduce greenhouse gases, specifically in the areas of:

Nitrogen Management

Cover Cropping

Rotational Grazing

While the initiative is federally funded, select recipient organizations have been chosen to distribute these funds regionally. The BC Investment Agriculture Foundation (IAF) is supporting all 3 streams in British Columbia through their Climate Agri-Solutions Fund (CAF) Program.

How the Funding Works

Maximum Funding Amount

$100,000

The OFCAF has a cumulative cap of $100,000. This amount can be spread across multiple projects and funding distributors, but cannot be surpassed.

Note: OFCAF funding is considered farm business income and subject to applicable Canada Revenue Agency taxation rules.

Cost Share Ratio

85 : 15

85% of approved project costs are eligible for reimbursement.

15% must be incurred by the applicant.

Note: Applicants must pay all approved project costs upfront and provide proof of payment prior to reimbursement.

Applicant Eligibility (BC Only)

All applicants must:

Have a farm in BC and hold farm status

Be an individual, partnership or corporation appropriately registered as an agricultural producer with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)

Be in operation for at least a year prior to their application date

Application Requirements

All applications are subject to review by a Professional Agrologist. If one of our Agrologists has consulted on your project’s design and formally consented to advocate for its approval, their name, testament, consulting fees, and any other applicable documents can be included directly in your application. If an agrologist was not formally consulted, your application will undergo review by a program approved Agrologist.

Applications require applicants to provide the following documentation:

A copy of your corporate registry (corporations and partnerships only)

A copy of the BC Assessment for any land parcels where project activities are proposed — this document must be addressed to the parcel's legal owner and designate the property as farm class land

A legal lease agreement if any project activities are proposed to occur on leased land

A map of the proposed project's location with annotations to illustrate relevant details

Eligible Expenses

At Purity Feed, we not only offer the technical expertise to assist you with your application, but also many high-quality products and services that meet the program's eligibility criteria.

Stream 1

Nitrogen Management

Appropriate soil nitrogen levels are a crucial component of a high-yielding hay field but can be difficult to achieve with synthetic fertilization alone. If soil nitrogen levels are too low or too high, both the environment and your crop can be negatively impacted.

Soil Testing and Mapping

Field mapping and soil testing are tools that allow producers to make educated crop input decisions based on precise data. Our agrologists are experienced in performing these services and possess both the technical skills and product knowledge necessary to optimize hay field performance.

Please note: Reimbursement for these services is capped at $20,000 and must be applied for in conjunction with another Nitrogen Management activity. See Adding Legumes in Rotation below.

Adding Legumes in Rotation — Seeding

Alfalfa, Clover, Sainfoin, and Birdsfoot Trefoil are only some examples of legumes that can be rotationally incorporated within seed mixes for their superior ability to support soil health and enhance carbon storage.

Our 55% DLF bare alfalfa Echelon Orchardgrass mix is commonly used for this purpose, pairing the benefits of legumes with complementary grass species like AG-HAY to support excellent crop quality and stand-persistence across multiple cuttings.

We also offer custom seed blend formulation services on a select basis. Whether supplementing an existing mix or designing a new one from scratch, our agrologists are passionate about working alongside producers to find a blend suitable to their growing environment.

Stream 2

Cover Cropping

Cover cropping has quickly become a popular practice among many BC producers. By introducing new species to your field, the existing soil bed's fertility, disease resistance, erosion control, and invasive weed protection all stand to benefit.

Intercropping

Intercropping is an approach to cover cropping where two or more different crops are grown simultaneously in the same field to achieve superior performance than each would be capable of on its own. Our 16-species Covers & Co. Full Season Cover Crop Mix is a carefully selected blend of warm and cool season plant species designed for exactly this purpose. Available in both 60 lb. and 2000 lb. bags, we are BC's only dealer of Covers & Co. products.

Winter Cover Cropping

Winter Cover Cropping involves planting a crop in late summer or fall to protect and preserve the field's soil throughout the dormant winter months ahead. While harvest is not the main priority of this approach, both intercropping and winter cover cropping promote the incorporation of winter hardy species like Fall Ryegrass, capable of extending the growing season for an additional cut, providing excellent fall grazing forage, and enduring harsh winter temperatures to provide rapid early spring ground cover.

Please note: Associated planting costs and equipment purchases (50:50 cost share ratio up to $30,000) are also eligible for reimbursement. We do not offer these options, but are happy to provide a recommendation.

Stream 3

Rotational Grazing

Rotational grazing involves the strategic division of one large pasture into several small sections that livestock can be moved through sequentially. This approach ensures that each section is allotted a period of time for rest and recovery.

Fencing

Implementing a rotational grazing system starts with infrastructure and we take great pride in our wide selection of fencing options. If you aren't sure where to start, give our fencing calculator a try.

Our extensive collection features products like Gallagher electric fencing systems, pressure-treated wood fence posts from PWP, and durable metal fence posts that are ideal for both permanent and temporary setups. These are each excellent cross-fencing options, eligible for reimbursement through this program.

Please note: Perimeter fencing must be aligned with the rotational grazing system to be eligible.

Solar Watering Troughs

Clearfab solar-powered watering troughs have rapidly become one of our most popular products among livestock owners. These units offer a mobile, renewable-energy powered solution to water accessibility barriers previously preventing rotational grazing systems.

The Solar Water Buggy is a 275-gallon mobile watering trough constructed of highly durable 10-gauge steel and equipped with a 2" ball hitch receiver for easy relocation. Using its 405-watt solar panel configuration, each unit can fulfill the drinking water needs of 250 head.

At Purity Feed, we offer 3 pump options that range from 8–40 feet of vertical lift and 100–300 feet of horizontal push.

Please note: Each unit comes with a 14 ft metal guard rail for hose protection, a 50 ft hose, 100 ft of rope, and a floating pump. Additional 50 ft hose extensions are also available for purchase.
* Often paired with an electric fencing system to maximize surplus energy generated by the waterer's solar panel configuration. *

Improved Pasture Composition — Seeding

The addition of select legumes and other high-quality forage to a pasture's seed bed can both improve its productivity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by grazing livestock. These plant species possess anti-methanogenic properties, allowing them to significantly reduce the methane gas produced during digestion.

We offer several pasture seed blends, each specifically designed to meet the varying needs of our customers. Our Seed Guide provides information on these blends, including their compositions, intended uses, and recommended application rates. Our Irrigated Pasture Mix and Horse & Sheep Pasture Mix are both popular options that can be modified by our agrologists to further augment their anti-methanogenic potential.
