The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.
Chinese Proverb
Follow these 6 steps to plant a healthy tree:
1. Dig a hole- Be sure to dig a hole that is twice the size of the pot and 1 1/2 times the depth. The hole should be deep enough that the roots can sit in it without bending or crowding.
2. Remove the pot- Set the rootball in the hole adding a bit of soil to make sure the base of the tree where the rootball sits is even with the surface.
3. Refill the hole- When refilling mix some conditioner with the soil that you dug out. In the past it was recommended you use more conditioner but now it's believed that you should only add minimal amendments to encourage the roots to acclimatize to its new soil.
4. Water- Water to settle the soil. If needed you can add a little more soil.
5. Mulch- Add 1-2 " of mulch fill the top of the hole. This will help keep the moisture in the soil and regulate the soil temperature.
6. Water- Water again, and water regularly until it is well established. Be sure to water the area away from the tree to encourage the roots to spread out, this will help the tree acclimatize to the new soil.
Planting a tree not only make you feel like you are contributing to making our earth a better place, it also helps clean the air we breathe, filter the water we drink and provides habitat for over 80% of our worlds biodiversity.
So go ahead, plant a tree and make your world a little better.
